Analysis of Metal Work Industry Standards in Kabul (Metal Work Cluster Survey)

This project was designed to conduct a research on the industry standards in the Metal Works industry in Kabul, particularly to determine the technology level, possibilities of integration of innovative technologies, and labour distribution in the Metal Works industry This research project used a cluster sampling method for the data collection, there were four clusters identified in the metal work industry. The target groups were company owners and staff of 150 metal work workshops in different parts of Kabul. The scope of this task was limited to these 150 workshops.

The overall objective of this project was to provide research results about the division of labour, level of the employed technologies and qualification demands for selected economic clusters in Kabul i.e. Metal Work industry. The four clusters identified in the metal work industry include, 1. Production of supplementary materials for construction work and buildings, 2. Production of agricultural tools, 3. Production of office tools and furniture, and 4. Production and repair of small parts. The first cluster makes the largest part of the industry and therefore the sample size was formed of 40% of this cluster, followed by an equal 20% of the remaining three clusters. The industry produces 23 different types of products, with the top five product being doors made by 43% of all workshop, fence by 36%, desks by 31%, chairs by 31%, axe by 19%.
